Mrs. Sherschell noted that there may be a third alternative—that of direct election of School Board members. However, this method would only be available as a local option if the General Assembly changes state law.
She also said that the law provides for as many as two ‘‘at large” School Board members.
The decision of School Board size rests with the Electoral Trustees, according to Mrs. Quaintance. She told the group that the Supervisors could recommend that membership be enlarged and authorize the action but it was not binding on the Electoral Trustees.
The Supervisors have already set School Board membership at five and passed a motion to that effect at the last meeting, said Hobson.
“1 think public input could very readily change their minds,” responded Mrs. Sherschell.
“It would have to be a lot of public input, I believe,” Hobson countered.
“If we still have the same Electoral Board appointing School Board members, we might be in worse shape than we are now” should School Board membership be expanded to include one or more “at large” members,
