The end of all news WAVA on the radio dial here, with its continuous 24 hours news and weather forecasts, has caused a virtual firestorm of surprise and hunting for an alternative all news radio service.
It all happened recently when the powerful Washington WAVA-FM signal suddenly changed after more than 10 years from a steady diet of news to something called “mellow rock" music. This came about after sale of the station by news executive Arthur W. Arundel, of The Plains. Arundel, wh(j had founded the now successful all-news idea in the United States at WAVA, said the change was the “choice of new owners” and that he wanted to “move on to other things in communications and public affairs.” Two other Washington stations have now copied the WAVA all news idea. They are NBC’s WRC at 980 on the AM dial and WTOP at 1500 on AM which was recently purchased by the Outlet Corporation, headed by Bruce Sundlun, also of The Plains.
