Students who have fallen way behind their grade level in mathematics are taking part in a special program and they’re learning. What’s more, they’re having a great time doing it
After a late start due to delay in the arrival of dollars and equipment, Molly Hobson opened her Mathematics Resource Skills Development Laboratory—better known as the math lab—on November 14.
The Federally funded program is geared towards intensive remedial instruction for students in grades four through seven. Classes are small, usually with a maximum of eight, and students work with a wide selection of materials, ranging from traditional black boards and text books to sophisticated computers.
The little room hums with activity. A visit to a sixth grade class last week found eight children working independently at individual lessons—four sitting around a circular table with pencil and papers, two working with tapes in three-sided booths and two at computers.
In the background, there was a quiet buzz of whispering.
“Two plus 24...Eight, nine, ten...Nine times three” as children figured aloud.
Thanks to the Federal money channelled through the Title I program Rappahannock is able to offer students the educational opportunities provided by a math lab with a low pupilteacher ratio. It would be impossible for a relatively poor rural school system to equip a classroom with a mathiputer or a programmed learning Systems 80 machine
