But the last three statewide Democratic primaries in 1969, 1970 jmd 1977 were fiascos for the-party. They were disasters, both economically and organizationally. Wounds from the doubleheader 1969 primary (which also included a run-off election for the governor and attorney general nonlinaticn) still fester. These bitterly fought battles left campaign coffers and worker emotions drained, and many Democrats now feel they are too self-destructive to be continued.
