Juay tlew out the door and was back in a minute with a smile on her face.
“How many did it take?” asked Mrs. Hobson, pausing in her supervision of another youngster.
“Two,” answered Judy proudly.
Mrs. Hobson explained later that use of manipulative materials in “experiments” like the one ' performed by Judy help children to remember facts. For each skill level that a student works on, Mrs. Hobson has several such experiments, in addition to games and other high interest projects.
Prior to the beginning of classes in the math lab, Molly Hobson spent a week testing 66 children. Thirty-two were placed in the new program. As the original 32 are “brought up to par” and moved into regular class, Mrs. Hobson said she will introduce others into the lab.
Computer “Letter*”
After the pre-class testing, Mrs. Hobson arranged for every student to get a personal message from a computer. The printouts were addressed to the children individually and done in letter form. The “letters” divided areas tested into three categories—“what you are able to do”, “what you need review on” and “what you need to learn.”
The letters, said Mrs. Hobson, were the first time many of her kids had ever seen “positive results. It / made them feel special to get a letter from a computer in Tulsa, Oklahoma,” she observed. “The computer knew them. It made them feel important.”
