The gardens are beautifully landscaped with assorted plantings so that National Museum is spelled out sufficiently and distinctly enough to be visible from the air both during the day and at night with proper lighting.
Select Boutiques
The good fortune of a guided tour by the owner of one of the select boutiques in Benin City gave us the rare opportunity of seeing the interior workings of a wood and silver craft workshop. The physical conditions of each defy description and must be seen to be believed. Many artists at various stages of carving, fashioning and finishing articles of ebony and mahogany, remind one of a beehive with each performing his role with tl^e crudest of tools and the most primitive methods. While the number of artists involved in silver crafting is less, the delicacy of their many finished products is a miracle based on quality of tools and methods.
Accompanied by a Caylonese lady, we were able to admire the extensive variety of cloth designs and bargain for a few select pieces in the market place. A Sunday visit to a country village where we were greeted by a Chief and dined with a prominent member of the community was a unique and rare experience. We were entertained at lunch by the wife of a prominent lawyersolicitor and at dinner by a Ceylonese family during our week’s stay in Benin City.
Following a stimulating dinner party with our host and friends at an extremely good Chinese restaurant we returned to Lagos (Yaba) on Saturday, Nov. 19 to await our departure on Monday.
