But in a convention, nomination requires the vote of a majority of the delegates, and as many roll-call ballots as may be necessary are taken until one candidate receives a majority. Usually, after each roll call, the candidate receiving the fewest votes drops out with his delegates going to other candidates.
How well the convention method might serve the Democrats depends upon how involved those voters who consider themselves members of the party wish to become in the delegate selection process. If those turning out for the mass meetings represent the broad » party mainstream, the likelihood of a viable candidate being nominated will be good.
But if they do not, and the convention is controlled by the party’s liberal faction, then it is highly unlikely that a candidate will emerge who is in that mainstream. And if he is not, then he won’t have a prayer of winning against a moderate or conservative Republican in the November general election.
