City Scenes

There are a great number of taxis, small Volkswagen buses called Danfos, and countless motorcycles on the roads and so-called streets. All driven at tremendous speeds with complete lack of discipline or consideration for other drivers or pedestrians. The absence of traffic controls and strategically stationed policemen is beyond belief and the net result is a high rate of serious and fatal accidents.

The frequency of "acceptable” restaurants is rare. One notable exception was the Mogambo, a Greekowned establishment built in 1959. It is a large open air area, beautifully landscaped, shaded with palm trees and a bonus of two chimpanzees who seemingly delight in captivity with the attention of the guests. A lunch consisting of choice steak, mixed salad and French wine was just what we needed before leaving Ikeja for Benin City.
