was originally swampland b£|t today it is the site of luxury hotels, embassies and private residences. Ikoyi is the old residential area of Lagos and' cool, colonial houses stand in spacious gardens amid scarlet flame trees, bougainvillea and frangipani blossom.
Apartment blocks are gradually replacing rambling bungalows and commercial offices are creeping in but there is still an old-world, well-heeled charm about the place. We had lunch at the Ikoyi Hotel in its 15th floor restaurant overlooking the island.
The cost of living is astronomical with simple everyday commodities selling at fantastic prices; for example eggs cost approximately $3.00 per dozen; cucumbers, 75 cents each. As far as housing in the best residential areas of Lagos, we were told that the annual rent for a two-story home with 3-4 bedrooms, garage, garden, etc. could go as high as $40,000.
