revenues enough to offset summer operating losses, according to the Wall Street Journal. The slides are expensive. The cost of Alpine Slide track for the Bromley ski area totalled more than $400,000 for two 4,060 foot tracks at $50 a foot.
The WSJ reported that the Bromley ski area sold 173,000 rides on its slide last year. Tickets cost $2.75 and customers often waited up to three hours in line last year for the ride down at speeds averaging 10 to 15 miles per hour.
In considering the issuance of a special use permit, the Board of Zoning Appeals is required by the zoning ordinance to consider a variety of factors including traffic impact. The ski area’s primary access is Harris Hollow Road which runs through the town of Washington and is not yet totally paved.
According to highway department resident engineer Don Askew, the road meets traffic count prerequisites for surface paving. The present 30 foot right of way would have to be expanded to 50 feet with land donated by landowners to meet paved road standards.
Highway Department policy precludes condemnation of the additional 20 feet required for surface treatment. According to Askew, the right of way must be donated by landowners.
Tallies of vehicles using the road within a 24 hour period range from 323 (from the corporate limits of Washington to the intersection with Rt. 654) to 46 (on the 4.8 mile section between Rts. 625 and 623).
