Mt. Salem Church, historical in itself, is also connected with an important historical figure. Rev. Barnett Grimsley, who won renown as the "Fighting Pastor” in the Civil War, ministered to Mt. Salem’s congregation for 25 years. Rev. Grimsley died in 1885 and is buried in the Washington Baptist Church yard.
“We need to preserve these structures which illustrate the manner in which our forefathers lived and worked and worshipped,” wrote Mrs. Mank in a letter to Calder Loth, Senior Architectural Historian for the Virginia State Historical Landmarks Commission. “Many of these buildings cannot be duplicated today and we feel that here in Rappahannock we have such a place.”
