“For every $1 spent, $1.52 was realized in safety benefits derived from the projects,” Mills said.
Improved sight distances for motorists resulted in a 100 per cent decrease in fatalities, a 43 per cent drop in injury-causing accidents, and a 13 per cent drop in the total number of accidents at 18 locations.
Pavement grooving at five locations reduced the total number of accidents from 271 to 138, or 49 per cent, and decreased injury-causing accidents from 70 to 29, or 59 per cent.
Other projects included eliminating substandard bridges, widening and improving the alignment of roadways, removing raised medians, and improving 19 intersections. y
Present and future projects include the replacement of old-style guardrails with newer, stronger types which incorporate turned-down ends, to prevent possible vehicle impalement and to redirect out-of-control vehicles.
Concrete curbs at exit ramps are being removed in conjunction^ with the elimination of other roadside obstacles to provide a safer recovery area for errant motorists missing an exit or running off the roadway.
