Manipulating The Fungus
Because of the tremendous difficulties involved in developing a resistant and competitive chestnut, a more logical approach to the problem is to try to suppress the fungus itself, or at least control its action the host trees. There is at least one exciting new development in this research effort.
We now know that a unique strain of the chestnut blight fungus exists. This strain is much less harmful to American chestnuts than the more common pathogenic strain. It is, therefore, known as a “hypovirulent” fungus (meaning that it is "beneath” the normal degree of virulence, or ability to harm its host).
The hypovirulent strain has two important characteristics: (1) It is unable to kill American chestnut trees. (2) It is able to suppress the more common “virulent”
