The result is that there are unprecedented cases of chestnut blight cankers healing over, with no apparent damage to the tree. The big question that remains is, Will the hypovirulent fungus be able to spread from tree to tree and maintain itself in the forest?
Current Research
Despite the difficulties and unbelievable odds against successful control of the blight, there is a great deal of work being done. The Lesesne State Forest in Nelson County, Virginia is headquarters for research in hybridization and radiation breedings carried out by the Virginia Division of Forestry. The well-known Ross tree, also in Nelson County, is a large American chestnut that provides a source for cuttings used in breeding attempts.
