To the editor:
As a student of the Rappahannock County Public School System, I am very disappointed in the way the School Board is handling the teacher situation. Rappahannock County, especially in the high school, has always had problems gaining new and devoted teachers and we are very lucky to have the ones that we do have. I have seen a lot of teachers leave because of low pay and benefits and I’m afraid we ^ will lose more this year. Why are we letting our teachers slip through our fingers?
The purpose for teachers is education, but at Rappahannock our teachers seem to give a little more. Do you realize that practically every teacher in the high school is a sponsor of some club or organization? This takes a lot of time and effort on the teacher’s part, but in any other schools, not half of the teachers would be involved with their students, in or out of school.
I believe that we, the students, have very much respect and admiration for our teachers. I think almost any student would stand behind and back our teachers because they are more than just our teachers, they are our friends.
As a student, I invite the School Board to come and sit in on some classes—listen to the students and teachers, eiamine the student and teacher relationships. We are taught much more than just history and geography.
