*uc ursi meeting ot the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department was held June 4, 1952. Officers elected included Tom Tear, president; C. M. M. Green, vice president; E. G. Hackley, I ■i secretary; H. M. F. Palmer, Jr., treasurer; Charlie Compton, Chief; Elmer Jenkins, assistant chief; Elmer Lillard, captain and Mitchell Green, lieutenant,” according to Mary Priest who gave a brief history of the establishment of the fire company at the recent annual banquet.
The Ladies Auxiliary entertained the firemen and guests on March 31 with the 25th annual dinner since the inception of the fire company and subsequent rescue squad. The Auxiliary was organized in August of 1952 and the first banquet given he following year, making ihis one the silver anniversary.
Other charter members tamed included Lloyd tfywaters, Bernard Weaver, leremiah Atkins, Jr. and Braxton James. Deceased harter members are Col. J. N. Caperton, Walter Slavik and A. C. Latham, Jr. The organization of the company was aided by Murphy Hoffman of Culpeper and Frank Stoutamyer of Front Royal, each active in their respective companies. The first Amissville fire engine was a Seagraves, the model of which is disputed, 1923-27. It took 39 gallons of gas to drive it from Washington, D. C. where it was purchased for $50, to Amissville. The gas tank was larger than the water tank, according to some of the firemen. The first large fund raising
