The most promising research on hypovirulence originated in Europe (where the same blight fungus has affected the European chestnut); follow-up work is being done at the Connecticut Agriculture Research Station.
The ecology of the American sweet chestnut has always fascinated me. The researchers, as 1 have said, are working against all probability. But what a wonderful service it would be to the American people if this generation lives to see a healthy young stand of American sweet chestnuts!

To the editor:
I am presently finishing my second year of high school in this county and the controversies within the school system are becoming more and more obvious to me.
It is a fact that all of our athletic teams are sponsored by hard working, dedicated coaches. Of this I am certain because I know most of these sponsors.
These coaches work after school with their teams, come home tired, eat a late dinner, then somehow do the work that is required of every teacher. For all of this they receive less than one-third the amount paid for extracurricular duties in surrounding school systems but work as hard or harder.
I feel that there should be a sufficient fund in the school budget to run an activity bus the entire school year. This would enable more students to participate in extra curricular programs.
Many of the sponsors spend more out-of-pocket money in supporting their programs than they receive in supplemental pay for the added responsibility. These people deserve better.
