As a pacifist, I found this memorial discouraging but of course, not suprising. We Americans are as convinced of the need for the war against the British to establish our independence and the necessity of the Civil War to establish one inviable unity as the Chinese are convinced that only through war could they drive out the imperialists, defeat the feudal influences in their society and establish the supremecy of the Chinese Communist Party.
I thought of visits to Mount Vernon, to Carlisle House in Alexandria, where it is said that the fateful meeting of colonial governors was held which decided to levy the tax on the colonists that inflamed revolutionary propagandists, to Lexington, Massachusetts, where the shot was fired which rang ‘round the world. What is memorable about our visit to the Peasant’s Institute was that this was the first time we had been taken to such a place and it was the first revolutionary propaganda to which we had been exposed— as opposed to discussions of the effects of the ‘‘Gang of Four” and other regular propaganda which takes the revolution and its success for granted.
