One of the things I thought I noticed was that the people do not follow a practice of visiting one another and find adjusting to change of circumstances or failure to abide by rules more difficult than we would. They seemed comfortable as long as the expected was done but unprepared for the unexpected.
Taught Through Repidtion
If this is indeed true, I would guess their attitude has something to do with the way children are taught. Again, our opportunities for observation were limited, but the teaching I observed was by rote. The teacher would read a sentence or a phrase and the whole class of more than 35 students would shout at top voice just what the teacher had said. Obviously, this method of teaching in room after room of a school was a chilling experience if for no other reason than I felt a child’s hearing, by graduation time, would be damaged.
Learning that depends on the exact repitition of what one is told leaves little room for initiative beyond more study of the same sort. Some of our group felt that many of the Chinese they met were especially dedicated to
