wno cares about keeping Rappahannock beautiful? Who cares enough to do more than just talk about it?
Judging by the litter piled up along our roadsides, not many people give two hoots about the appearance of the land. The few who do, the few who are willing to work at keeping this place lovely, have good reason to be disheartened.
Two weekends ago, Amissville Cub Scouts under the leadership of Silas Martin, spent Saturday on Route 642. They worked their way down the shoulders of the road, picking up bottles, tin cans and other refuse. They reached their truck, tossed in the garbage bags and climbed on for the ride back home. On the road they’d just walked over were four beer cans—new cans, cans that had just been dumped not more than an hour or so earlier. The same weekend, Mrs. Joyce DeBerg organized her neighbors for the annual clean-up of the Old Hollow Road—a rite of spring that’s been going on for almost a decade. While the volunteers were still out in the hot sun, bending and stretching, bending and stretching to reach the broken bottles, rusted cans and garbage tossed by uncaring drivers, a couple of slobs whizzed by and threw out more. Why this slap in the face? Were they ridiculing the responsible citizens and efforts to keep Rappahannock beautiful ?
