learning, that they were working harder to advance themselves than we usually do. The only sort of activity of this nature I noticed was someone jogging at dawn near one hotel in Peking. But it is true that although our group had to stick close together, each of us had slightly different experiences and we interpreted what we saw differently.

At one point, I wrote out .one of Shakespeare’s sonnets for our permanent guide, Mr. Tao, a young man of 24 who had an exceptional knowledge of English. He found some unfamiliar words and difficult expressions in it but he was deeply interested and wanted a full explanation.

China’s Future

I have come away from China confounded about its future. We didn’t see enough, weren’t there long enough, were too confined in our opportunities to meet people. For the first time, I wish I understood economics. What might the Chinese rulers plan if they want to work for the benefit of the nation rather than the benefit of the few? I have a strong feeling that so far, plans have been to benefit the people generally. These are some of my informed conclusions:

1. To let up on the effort to feed the people as its first
