But even in the outlying areas, such as Kun Ming and Taiyuan, where we were surrounded by hordes of people, I felt no overt sense of hostility. No Chinese was rude or abrasive to any of us. I wonder, as the tourist traffic increases, if this attitude will persist. The point is that there are enough people in China already and outsiders only take up space and services not available to the average citizen there.
Probably, most Americans have heard of the exceptional honesty of the Chinese—at least as they relate to “foreign friends.” None of us were concerned by the slightest that any of our goods would be touched and frequently, there were no locks on our hotel room doors. - We noticed that the Chinese locked some of their own doors in institutions and that bicycles had locks. Some walls had broken glass mounted along the tops and when a group of dwellings were to be built, the first construction was a surrounding wall. But I expect that the Chinese are nearly as honest with themselves as with others. Everyone has so little and lives so closely with everyone else that there would be few places to conceal anything
