Delft wart* takes its name from the town in Holland where so many pieces, especially tiles, were made. The British began making fine delft in the late sixteenth century. This type of earthenware consists of clay which, when fired in a kiln oven, turns a pale white. The ceramic is then coated with a glaze of lead base and tin oxide. On top of the raw glaze the potter painted colored decorations, cobalt for blue, manganese for purple, iron oxide for red. Mistakes could not lx- corrected so old patterns often tended to be simplified versions of the Chinese style of decorations.
