Currently, sheriff’s department personnel are paid for using their own cars at the rate of 17 cents per mile. Noting that gas has climbed from 60 cents a gallon a year-and-a-half age to an anticipated $1.50 gallon before the end of summer, Buntin noted that mileage reimbursement will have to go up to 21 cents per mile just to offset gas price increases.
In his proposed 1980-81 budget, Buntin said he asked for 25 cents per mile if county cars aren’t purchased. Currently, he noted, the state will reimburse mileage costs in the coming year at the rate of 18.5 cents for the first 15.000 and 10 cents per mile for anything over 15,000 miles. This will work out to 13.64 cents per mile to Rappahannock’s force, leaving the county with approximately 12 cents per mile to pay with local revenue at the 25 cents per mile rate.
Deputies are now logging 34.000 miles per year, according to Buntin.
The sheriff noted that the state will pick up full salary for the sheriffs department and the commonwealth attorney this year, saving the county approximately $42,000.
