Traffic Hazards
Robert Eastham pointed out two traffic hazards in Wakefield District. He requested first that “no parking” signs be posted along Route 647 at its intersection with Route 522 next to Fanners and Merchants Bank in Flint Hill. Trucks parking along the road opposite the bank block the view of traffic approaching from the direction of Front Royal, he said.
Bob Dennis, also a W akefield District resident, noted that vehicles now cut through the bank parking lot rather than make the turn onto Route 522 because of sight distance impaired by truck parking.
An even greater hazard exists at the right angle intersection of the Resettlement Road (Route 628) and Route 659 near the Aileen plant. Eastham continued. He stressed the danger of accidents for the school bus which must make a wide turn at the intersection with view of any oncoming traffic blocked by the brow of a hill and high banks on the sides of the road. “We're going to have a load of children hit there sooner or later,” Eastham warned.
The highway department is aware of the dangers at that intersection. Askew responded. As in other instances, he said, the solution lies in securing the necessary right-of-way to improve the road. “We’ve looked into it before without much success," he said.
