New coach Bob Edmonson is satisfied with the first junior varsity baseball team he’s fielding this year at RCHS.
According to Edmonson, the team is strong on experience. All the starting unit has had at least one year’s experience at the JV level. The junior Panthers have team speed so Edmonson is relying on his players stealing bases whenever possible. This tactic may balance some potential weakness in tfie batter’s box.
Scheduling hasn’t helped the team. The JV must face the Luray Bulldogs, one of the district's toughest opponents, in an away game this Friday after opening at home against Culpeper on Thursday afternoon.
One of the JV’s biggest drawbacks this year has been the lack of practice time on their home field. All spring, the junior Panthers have worked out at the elementary school while the varsity has used the high school field where home games will be played.
Edmonson is afraid he may face some problems with weaknesses in pitching and infielding, areas that he feels are untried. He described progress as coming along slowly but is satisfied with improvements in performance.
