(Continued from Page 1) Baldwin asked for the sheriffs projected salary increase in the coming fiscal year.
“We’re getting quite an increase,” Buntin acknowledged, stating that his salary will go from approximately $12,000 to over $18,000.
Supervisor Hubert Gilkey noted that the sheriffs raise and increases to $19,500 for the commissioner of revenue and country treasurer were set by the General Assembly.
Deputies Get Leu
“What about the deputies?” asked Baldwin. “If they’re getting enough salary, then they can afford to buy their own gas.”
Buntin replied that the General Assembly had raised minimum starting pay for deputies to $10,270 with a maximum, depending on years of experience, of $14,000. The raise works out to approximately $2,000 a vear. he said.
Buntin informed the supervisors that deputy Steve Crossman recently had to replace his vehicle when the car was damaged during a chase after a stolen automobile.
"I think we’re coming down to the point where we’re going to have to do something,” said chairman E. P. Luke.
Supervisor H. B. Wood suggested buying fewer than four vehicles since only one car will be on the road at a time. He also proposed buying smaller compact automobiles rather than foilsized ones.
