We Apologize

To the editor:

In reference to the article in last week's newspaper about V.F.D.'s in money crisis, I think someone owes Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department an apology for misinformation about having no water in the fire trucks.

It is true that we are having financial difficulties. But as to go as far as saying that we have no water in our trucks because the heat has been turned off and the water would freeze!

The heat has been turned off but only upstairs. It is on downstairs so we are able to keep our trucks full of water at all times. When there is a fire and we are called, we will respond with trucks full of water.

That article gives Chester Gap Fire Department and its men a bad name. The fire department has enough trouble raising funds. What do you think that article will do to us?

BRUCE WILLIAMS

Chief, Chester Gap

Volunteer Fire Department (Editor’s note: We apologize to the firemen from Chester Gap. We thought we had sufficient verification on reports that fire trucks were kept empty to prevent the water from freezing in the unheated fire hall. Obviously we were wrong and should have checked first with representatives from Chester Gap’s VFD. Again, we apologize for the misinformation and regret any embarassment we may have inadvertantly caused the members of Chester Gap’s Volunteer Fire Department.)
