Yeast required for fermentation reproduces itself every four hours while the bacteria that grows on com reproduces every 20 minutes, said Rocca.

Without either high temperatures or chemicals to kill the bacteria, it’s not hard to figure out that the bacteria are going to outdo the yeast, he added.

Rocca said his total investment in his “down on the farm still” amounts to $10,000, including legal fees. His was the first permit in the state, he explained, and so he consulted attorneys to make sure his permits were all in order.

Since publicity on the success of his still, Rocca has become somewhat of an alternate energy celebrity. “Two years age, 1 couldn't get anyone to come down my bumpy lane to visit me. Now I’ve had a plane try to land on that same lane,” he said.

Rocca is a full-time farmer and so doesn’t have the time or the inclination to take dropin visitors for a tour of his still. But he said he’s willing to work with local extension agents in scheduling visits foi groups of area fanners in terested in trying alcohol fuel production.
