Four residents from Jackson District — Roy Jenkins, Mrs. Bernice Scott, E. L. Jones and W. O. Scott—all cited the need for improvements to Route 637, including surface treatment for an additional 1.5 miles and widening other sections to eliminate hazards to school bus traffic.
Askew said that blacktopping of the 1.5 mile stretch is included in the current year’s budget. He noted, however, that several landowners along the road are opposed to hard surfacing. Askew added that petitions in favor of surface treatment may help speed the project along. “There’s no question about it. We have an obligation to those who donated right-of-way in anticipation of having it hard surfaced,’’ he said. He acknowledged that it would take opposition from “an overwhelming majority” of landowners and users of the road to block the hard surfacing project.
