operating but they’re not as convenient as Rocca’s in nearby Loudoun County. Green reported that fanners in Germany reduce 160 proof alcohol on over 1,600 onfarm stills. This hydrous alcohol is then collected and transported to a central location where it is further distilled to reach 200 proof anhyrdrous alcohol with the distillers grain by-products sold for livestock feed.
Farmers in Switzerland have a similar network of stills but go one step further and use methane gas from cattle manure to produce the heat needed to keep the mash at a high temperature. “They’re all way ahead of us,” Green admitted.
But Virginia and the rest of the United States are working to catch up. At the University of Pennsylvania, research is under way on fast growing hybrid poplar trees that can be used as the raw material for alcohol production. Green noted, however, that large scale cellulose production of alcohol probably won’t be technologically feasible until the 1990’s.
