The liquid distillers grains from the process is very high in protein and makes an excellent animal feed supplement, according to Green. He recommended this byproduct highly as a cattle feed, especially for dairy cattle as some studies have shown 10 t6 12 percent increased milk production with this type of feed.
Farmers producing alcohol fuel must decide how to use the mash, either to feed it to their own stock or sell it. When wet, said Green, the mash doesn’t keep long without souring and spoiling but the cost of drying distillers grains is normally high enough to eat into expected profits said Green.
Currently, Dried Distillers Grain Solids (DDGS) sells for S125 per ton but drying costs to $80 or S90 per ton, according to Green. This market can change, he said, noting that DDGS now brings $220 per ton in Scotland.
