The single most expensive component of alcohol production is the heat source required to maintain the mash at high temperatures, according to Green. Wood, coal or lower cost agricultural waste materials such as peanut hulls, straw, corn hulls and saw dust can be burned, he said, but whichever is used, farmers must consider the net energy balance. "How much energy are you going to have to use to make a gallon of alcohol?” he said, noting that controversy exists over whether this balance is negative or positive.

Alcohol produces 84,000 BTUs per gallon as compared to 154,000 per gallon for gasoline. While acknowledging that beverage distilleries are not very efficient, Green noted that they average approximately 120,000 BTUs to produce a gallon of alcohol. With newer, more efficient technology that recaptures much of the heat from the distillation process, a gallon of alcohol can be produced by burning only 30,000 BTUs, Green said.
