Happahannork Nrw« Suff Writer Rappahannock roads will feel the impact of declining gas tax revenues, both this year and in fiscal year 198081, according to Don Askew, resident engineer from the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation.
Askew told the supervisors at last Thursday’s annual public hearing on the secondary road budget that the county will receive only $355,000 for its secondary system during the current year, a drop of $77,000 in anticipated funds. Every Virginia county is experiencing this same 20 per cent shortfall, according to Askew.
In addition, he said, extensive road break-up caused by the 1979 spring thaws has combined with damage from last August’s floods and the early snowstorm in October to delay construction projects scheduled for the current year. “We’re about 95 per cent complete in restoration efforts," said Askew, noting that the Route 618 bridge, the last of several bridges to be repaired after being washed out in the Sperryville
