Buntin interjected that the department has at times borrowed Crossman’s fourwheel drive vehicle in order to get up into hollows and byways. Countering the argument that using small cars will result in substantial gas savings, Buntin said everyone in his department currently drives a mediumsized auto with no one getting more than 15 miles per gallon:
“From a practical point, we cannot expect people to put any of their personal resources into the county,” stated Luke. If the county wants to proyide its citizens with a service, ‘‘we must either pay for it or do without,” he said, noting that local employees need all of their salary just to live.
Luke asked sheriff Buntin to draw up a balance sheet, showing mileage costs and costs involved with purchasing cars. He also instructed Buntin to give the supervisors information on prices and gas consumption of compacts. Luke maintained that the supervisors need to examine the option of compacts so if they’re asked why they didn’t authorize purchase of economy cars, they’ll have an explanation.
In a final remark, Buntin told the board that he and his deputies provide their own guns as well as cars. “They cost S25B to $300,” he said, adding that the county doesn’t own even one gun.
