Not Gasohol
Warren Green prefaced his remarks by noting that the state department of agriculture has not yet taken a position in total support of alcohol fuels on a commercial basis. “They haven’t made up their minds yet. They’re still doing research,
"I can fully support onfarm production of alcohol for farm use,’’ Green added. "That’s 160 proof alcohol.”
Green emphasized that he wasn’t talking about gasohol, a blend of 90 per cent unleaded gasoline and 10 per cent anhydrous, 200 proof alcohol. Instead, said Green, the task force is more interested in the process that results in anhydrous alcohol at 200 proof or hydrous alcohol at approximately 160 proof.
Anhydrous alcohol costs between SI.60 and SI.80 a gallon to produce and is feasible only as a large scale operation, according to Green. The final product, however, can be legally sold. “As we stand here today, you can’t market less than 200 proof,” he said.
