Cattle Herds
The inventory of cattle and calves on U.S. farms showed very little change as of Jan. 1, 1980 from the year earlier count. In most every category, numbers continued well below the peak reached in January 1975.
According to K.C. Williamson, Extension specialist in animal science at Virginia Tech, total cows and beef cows in the United States held about the same as a year earlier, indicating cowcalf producers were reluctant to expand herds.
An eight percent increase in beef replacement heifers, which figures to be over 16 percent of the beef herd, suggests some increase in the cow herd is planned for 1980.
A noteworthy part of the cattle inventory was the significant increase in cattle numbers made in Virginia over the past year, said Williamson. Total cattle numbers in the Commonwealth increased 13 percent, all cows increased 16 percent and beef cows were up 21 percent over a year earlier.
