Greed, leading with 16 points, is in first place for leading race mare, followed by Donna Truslow’s black mare Honey’s Morn with 14 points. The fifth open hurdle race in which Royal Greed is entered is well-filled with 14 entries. Honey’s Morn, Patti Cassel up, will run in the two-mile ladies’ timber race, fourth on the card. Patti is second with 18 points behind Shelley O’Higgins, 23 points, for the lady rider of the year award.
Randy Waterman is out front for gentleman rider of the year (54 points) followed by a close race for second among Chick Owens with 33 points, Speedy Smithwick, 31 points, and Don Yovanovich, 29 points.
The Rappahannock Pony Race, sixth on the schedule, boasts 14 entries. The day concludes with Rappahannock’s well-known hound race with 40 hounds entered.
This year a new gate prize has been added, a Virginia ham, for which all spectators filling out a coupon will be eligible.
Warm weather, mountain air and the rolling hills of Rappahannock County should make this a popular day for race fans. Refreshments will be available at the course. Tickets are $3 at the gate and parking is free.
