Costs of litter clean-up on Rappahannock’s primary and secondary roads totalled $7,813 last year, according to statistics released by the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation.
Litter expenses for other neighboring counties in the Culpeper District were $5,818 for Orange, $4,652 for Madison, $5,633 for Culpeper and $10,5% for Fauquier. Total for the 13 counties in the district amounted to $211,475.
Asked why cost for Rappahannock’s litter cleanup appeared so high compared to other, larger counties, resident highway engineer Don Askew maintained that the figures weren’t a true or fair indication of actual expense.
