The department’s report of litter collection costs came as its maintenance forces engaged in the annual spring cleanup in connection with the state’s 47th Historic Garden Week celebration April 19-27.
In addition to its unsightly appearance, roadside litter also can be a safety hazard, Leigh said. Paper and other trash blown about by the wind may distract a motorist or obscure a driver’s vision.
Discarded cans and bottles also present a serious safety problem, Leigh said, especially when maintenance employees start mowing the roadsides. The trash can be picked up by the blades of the larger mowers and be thrown towards highway traffic.
