A friend of mine was given a spray of pussy willows by her college-freshman son, and found them worth keeping until he was fully graduated and married. Even then, the gift was barely faded enought to prevent a wave of guilt as they were stuffed into the garbage can.

A good plan might be to save one or two gift twigs in water for several months until they send out a collection of thin white roots. The weather will then be warm and the twigs can be planted in a temporary bed of good loose soil or set out directly in a permanent spot.

The plants root easily and should catch on well, given a little extra water the first year.
