Pat explained that in the challenge program, the girls themselves decide what they want to learn and set up requirements and a course of study. “Then, when they’re ready, they say ‘Okay, test us’ and we have to come up with some sort of comprehensive exam to test what they’ve learned,” she said.

“One challenge must be the challenge of the Girl Scout promise,” Pat continued. “The girls sat down as a group, thought about what their values are, what scouting means.” After the kids talked among themselves, they went individually before a board of adults, composed of Grace Sims, Diane Pendleton, Mary Botts Quaintance and Helen Holschuh.
