C. E. Johnson Jr. of Sperryville had the second high selling Angus bull at the 22nd annual Beef Cattle Improvement Association (BICA) Performance Tested Bull Sale held recently at Culpeper Agricultural Enterprises.
Purchased by Paul Saunders of Piney River for $2,450, this top son of Dynamo of Bleak Hill had a weaning ratio of 116, a test gain ratio of 103 and a yearling weight of 1,140, ratio 110.
The 57 bulls sold at the sale were designated “juniors” and were calved from January 1- March 31, 1979. The 57 head sold for an average price of $1,443. Fourteen Polled Herefords averaged $1,234, 33 Angus averaged $1,470, five Charolais averaged $2,030, four Simmental averaged $1,319 and one Brangus brought $1,000.
The 87 bulls tested in the junior test set a performance record, gaining an average of 3.24 pounds per day on the 140-day test and making an average adjusted 365-day weight of 1,052 pounds. The group selling represented the top performing two-thirds of the total test group.
