Orleans in 1885, became the leading “Professor” in the Storyville District and then began traveling. He wrote a tune about every place he visited. With his two hundred dollar suits and his small diamond in his front tooth, he wrote so many good tunes and invented so many jazz devices that he fashioned almost single handed, an entire musical literature. In Chicago they called him “Dr. Jazz”.
With the depression. Jelly found himself just another leader without a band. After years of being penniless, he nevertheless heard other bands playing his tunes on late night radio. He must be thrilled wherever he is to hear the re-created Red Hot Peppers, which was his great orchestral creation in Chicago in the mid-twenties.
