“Most organic mulches should be applied after plants are well established,” the specialist said, “and are at least four to six inches tall. Cultivate out all weeds before mulching. Spread the material evenly between plants to a depth of one to six inches, depending on the type of material.
Apply organic mulches when there is reasonably good soil moisture and just before the weather turns hot in the summer.
“Putting down mulch on dry ground may slow rain water getting into the soil as the mulch tends to absorb moisture,” said the faculty member in Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
