Closes Marina
Damage caused by the recent oil spill and the subsequent cleanup operations have prompted the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority to keep Bull Run Marina closed for the remainder of this year.
“We can’t invite the public to the park until extensive repairs and cleanup are done,” said Darrell Winslow, executive director of the Regional Park Authority. “The banks of the stream and the beach afre black with oil in spots and the smell is offensive.”
Bull Run Marina was used as a headquarters for the oil spill cleanup operations. “The big trucks and heavy equipment cracked and damaged the road and ramp,” Winslow said. “It’ll take some time to get the park back to normal.”
Meantime, visitors who fish and boat on the Occoquan are being directed to Fountainhead Regional Park, six miles downstream at the widest point of the lake. Fountainhead was not damaged by the spill and the bass are biting there, Winslow said.
