“Mulches reduce weed growth, maintain uniform moisture conditions, reduce erosion, reduce water loss and water requirements, reduce splash of soils and spread of disease, keep fruiting parts cleaner, reduce nutrient loss and fertilizer requirements, add humus for more workable soil, and add organic matter to the soil when organic materials are turned under,” said Diane Relf, Virginia Tech Extension specialist in home horticulture.

“Mulches of certain materials also can favorably modify soil termperature.”

There are three general groups of materials used for 'mulching—organic, inorganic and films.

Organic mulches are tree bark, compost, corncobs, grass clippings, hay or straw, peanut or other nut hulls, leaves, a horticulture grade peat moss, pine needles, and sawdust, chips or fibers of wood.
