business manager of a Girl Scout camp. It was just awful,” Pat recalled, shaking her head at the memories.
But her attitude changed when she moved to Rappahannock. She found that the only activity available for her three little jjirls was in scouting. Girl Scouts in Rappahannock then consisted of 30 Brownies with one overwhelmed, overworked and overburdened Valerie Jones as leader. So Pat stepped in and lent a hand.
“I’m the council crank,” she acknowledged with a rueful smile. But with her criticism and complaints, she also offered suggestions on how to improve the Girl Scout program for Rappahannock, how to expand opportunities beyond the county line and, most importantly, how to hold on to the girls once they became young ladies.
By her efforts, Pat Helmer has opened the door to wider horizons for the Cadettes she’s taken under her wing.
