Virginia’s tourism slump is continuing if the number of visitors to Shenandoah National Park is indicative of statewide trends.
According to superintendent Robert Jacobsen, park visitors in March, 1980, totalled 54,300, a decrease of 29.4 per cent over visits in the same month in 1979.
Calendar Year 1980 compared with Calendar Year 1979 shows a decrease of 22.5 per cent in park travelers.
Overnight stays at the park in March, 1980, numbered 7,628 while in March, 1979, overnight stays totaled 10,187.. f
Readings taken at the Big Meadows weather station show a maximum temperature of 59 degrees for March and a minimum of minus three degrees. Precipitation for the month totaled 4.49 inches and snowfall measured 16 inches.
