Lead Parade
Roy Jefferson, the former Washington Redskins football great, will be appearing in Winchester on Saturday, April 26, as the Youth Premiere Day Grand Marshall. Jefferson’s football career began with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1965 after he was selected Athlete of the Year by UP1 and played in the College All-Star Game.
He became the only receiver in the National Football League to gain more than 1,000 yards in both 1968 and 1969. During his five years with the Steelers, he was chosen to play in the Pro-Bowl and became an NFC All-Pro in 1969.
In 1971, Jefferson was traded to the Washington Redskins and in that year became the number one pass receiver. He continued to rank high in the NFL every year following until knee surgery in 1976.
Currently, Jefferson is host of WJLA-TV’s show. “It’s Elementary.”
In addition to featuring Jefferson as Grand Marshal, Youth Premiere Day will include a parade with majorettes, costume characters, girl scouts and special guests; stage entertainment with a magician, puppet show, singers and dancers; displays, concessions and free gifts. The parade begins at 1 p.m. on the Loudoun Street Mall in Winchester.
